Update~ I didnt know that you could regrow!

Wow! Have things been crazy around here lately. Digging out the area for the garden (pictures and post to come), keeping up with the daily house chores, raising two kiddos, and trying out new things to help myself and other Mamas or Dada's tackle house chores in half the time.

So if you haven't seen the before pictures of what I am about to show you then you can catch up with this post :  *My Life*: I didnt know that you could regrow! :)

So it has been six day since I took the scraps of everything, and some things have really taken off! Like I said on day one the Green Onions started to grow immediately. Theres a real bang for your buck just cut what you need off let it continue to grow in water. Mine is about 3- 4 inches long in a matter of six days. I think I'm going to have to trim some off and top a loaded baked potato. Mmmm Yummy :)

The Garlic on the other hand I don't think it likes me. My kitchen smells of Garlic. It hasn't rooted yet or even look like it may try to sprout. I will give it a little while longer, till it turns to mush I guess. I do know that you can start Garlic in your produce draw in your fridge I have done that plenty of times!

Carrots! hurray they have started rooting, growing new tops and loving my kitchen window. I think with them I will wait a week or two more until I transfer them into a deep pot or out into the garden.

Romaine Lettuce is just a growing! Its about 1-2 inches tall all ready. I was amazed at how quickly it grew.
So enough with the talking here are the newest pictures:

So come next week I will be adding in an avocado to the mix, I finally went out and bought one today. Also my mother in law told me a story about how she threw a bad onion down the hill one day. As she was weed eating around her property she came across that same onion sitting on top of the ground. It had rooted itself and has this amazingly pretty flower on it. So I bought an Onion today also and the girls and I will plant it so we can see what this pretty flower looks like. :) Come back for another update next week!

I didnt know that you could regrow! :)

So after looking around at ALL the interesting things on Pinterest. I came across regrow your own Celery! I was like no way. So I was talking to Dalila and asked if she would like to do a little project with me. Of course she eagerly says YES! So I grab some celery out of the fridge, we always have it on hand. So how cool would it be to grow it in our house or garden year round?!?! So we took the bunch cut off about 2 inches from the bottom. Put it in a bowl of water and within about 4 days to a week there were little leaves starting to poke threw. After about maybe a month of sitting in this bowl of water it had started to grow a root system. So that is when I had finally decided to plant our little "baby" in soil. We have recently started our newest one too. Dalila is always asking if she can eat her baby Celery, lol. I tell her it has to grow a little more to be BIG and strong like her.

So once I had really seen this with my own eyes that you can regrow Celery. I started wondering what else Dalila and I could try to regrow. So here is some of our "newest" members.

We went to our local Von's the other day to pick up somethings, I really wish I would have grab everything I found that you could regrow, but I only got half of my list. So we our trying now:

Carrots, Green Onions, Garlic, and Romaine Lettuce

So with the Carrots, Green Onions, and Romaine Lettuce you can fill the water up just about half way up the vegetable. With the Garlic you just want to barely get the bottoms wets, very little water or else they will turn to mush. I wish I would of had a pretty container to put the lettuce in, but oh well. :)  Oh I almost forgot its probably only been about 8 hours and the Green Onions have already grown 1/4 of an inch!

I will up date pictures in a week so y'all can see the progress.

A million ideas.....

Well first let me introduce myself I'm Vicki,  have two beautiful little girls,  live in the mountains of California, and I love to be a do it yourselfer. So I have decided that 2012 was going to be my year. I have all of these plans and things to get accomplished. I really need to make this list of everything I would love to do this year so I can watch the things get marked off and see the progress. I can happily say that I am marking quite a bit of things off already. My most recent task at hand is our garden this year. I'm am soooo truly excited. I have been getting every body's input on when to do this, what things they use to do, can I have your old canning materials, and do you have any great family recipe's.

So the oldest (Dalila)  and I have been cleaning the yard up, scoping out the perfect spot to build our garden fortress. About a month ago or so maybe two, we found this great article in one of my garden magazines. About using old milk jugs and turning them into green houses. In our household we go threw ALOT of milk, when I say alot I mean a gallon or more a day! So we had tons of milk jugs to donate to the cause. So we planted our seeds and every couple of days we go out on the deck and look threw the top of the jugs to see the growth. I do believe that as of right now this is Dalila's favorite part about this experience at the moment. Wait till she sees what else is to come! Oober excited :)

So with all that here is a little list of what we have growing in our greenhouses:

  • 2 different types of Lettuces
  • 2 different types of Carrots
  • 2 different types of Radishes
  • 2 different types of Peas
  • 2 different types of Green Beans
  • Bell Peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Jack be little Pumpkins
Also we have a couple different flowers were trying out:
  • Bunny tails grass
  • Amaranthus
  • Canterbury Bells

So I cant wait for the next stages. I hope you enjoy the adventure! :) Follow me on Pinterest http://pinterest.com/darvic/
